Doug Casey is awesome. During a panel discussion at FreedomFest on Tom Woods’ new documentary The Bubble, some statist from the audience yells at him to put his cigar out and Casey kindly tells him to fuck off.

Seriously watch that video. It’s hilarious.

Remember that through most of U.S. history, residential real estate was not viewed as an investment. You didn’t buy a house to make yourself wealthy selling it to someone else. It was viewed as an expensive consumer good that depreciated – you bought or built a house to live in it, just as you bought clothes to wear or a horse to ride. It was just a part of life – a necessity, a convenience, but an expense.

It’s a vicious cycle that the government uses to “create jobs”. They create an industry, fuel a bubble, collect massive amounts of tax, collect massive amounts of donations from the select few who just profited and then run like hell the other way.

The day that the government understands that business, NOT the government, creates jobs and that the economy runs itself and isn’t dependent on smarter-than-thou politicians, we will once again be a successful country. Until then, watch the bubbles burst.
