When you are dependent on the government, you can never be truly free. Case-in-point.

Do not blame Caesar, blame the people of Rome who have so enthusiastically acclaimed and adored him and rejoiced in their loss of freedom and danced in his path and given him triumphal processions. Blame the people who hail him when he speaks in the Forum of the new wonderful good society which shall now be Rome’s, interpreted to mean more money, more ease, more security, and more living fatly at the expense of the industrious. — Marcus Tullius Cicero (via timlebsack)

Have you ever noticed how statists are constantly “reforming” their own handiwork? Education reform. Health-care reform. Welfare reform. Tax reform. The very fact that they’re always busy “reforming” is an implicit admission that they didn’t get it right the first 50 times. — Lawrence W. Reed (via thinksquad)

Welfare Is A Politician’s Long Con

I wouldn’t go as far as to say Government hates you but I do know that they don’t care about you, individually.

Sure they say they care about you and they act as if they care about you, under the guise of welfare and entitlements. But they don’t actually care about you. They don’t want to take care of you and they don’t want to fix what troubles you, that’s not what they are good at.

What government is good at, and I mean really good at, is the illusion of caring. They know that if they give you just enough help that you feel as if they care and they provide this help through the practice of taking away as much as possible from everyone else without them noticing then most people will be satisfied with government. That’s the secret, finding the balance of pretending to care and being the perfect amount of greedy. It’s a very unique skill that generally rests in the hands of brilliant con men.

This is why the gov’t talks about maximizing tax revenues. That’s the key and their secret that they hide in plain view. Did you catch it? When politicians say they want to change the tax rate to find an equilibrium that will maximize revenues, they aren’t talking about your revenues, they are talking about their revenues. They aren’t calculating how much tax they should or shouldn’t take and how it would affect our income, they are talking about how much tax can they take without cutting their own income. That’s the trick, setting a tax rate so that people think they are still making money so that government can skim off the maximum amount of money, both a large percentage and a larger amount, give a little back and use the rest to spend on their own special interests and corporate buddies.

As Thomas Sowell once said, “First you take people’s money away quietly, and then you give some of it back to them flamboyantly.” This is the long con of the politician. This is the grand illusion of government.

That’s not exactly what the Grace Commission Report found, but it is close.
The report found that of all possible income taxes, 1/3 are never collected because they are attached to “under the table jobs” which report no incomes.
Another 1/3 of income taxes are lost do to government waste and inefficiencies.
The last 1/3 of income taxes are used to pay for the interest on federal debt and for “transfer payments”. “Transfer payments” are, for those that don’t know, government supplemented income or welfare.
But please, continue arguing about the 99% vs the 1%…

I predict future happiness for Americans, if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them. — Thomas Jefferson (via rileyyredd)
Our expensive welfare state is fueled by the destructive notion that “greed” is when you want to keep your own money but “compassion” is when you want to take somebody else’s.
